We offer tree health consultations, skilled pruning, technical removals, and high quality planting
People who care for trees are called arborists, and our field of work is known as arboriculture. Historically, arboriculture has been a male-dominated trade. Recent shifts in the industry have created opportunities for change in this area. Ursa Minor is one of Milwaukee's first female-owned tree care companies.
Owner/Operator Johanna O'Boyle is an ISA Certified Arborist with 5 years industry experience. She's skilled in rope and saddle climbing in many types of trees, and specializes in pruning techniques that promote a healthy tree structure and reduce risk to the tree and client. Additionally, her industry experience includes tree assessment, removal of invasive species, and native tree planting. She's passionate about preserving trees and educating people on the benefits of the urban forest. When she's not swinging around in the canopy, she loves to spend time with her daughter, hang out by Lake Michigan, experiment with permaculture, and admire the bumblebees in her vegetable garden.
We take climate change seriously, and recognize that many of the tools and types of equipment we use to do our job can have a negative impact and produce a lot of emissions. We try to offset this in whatever way possible by focusing on tree preservation, using battery powdered equipment, recycling logs through landscaping and mushroom inoculation, and utilizing our wood chips for biochar and planting projects.
If you happen to live within a few miles of Johanna's home in Brown Deer, don't be surprised to see her show up for an estimate on her bike!
